This week in ESG in 5: major moves from Amazon and Meta toward cleaner energy, a record UK carbon capture investment, and Vietnam’s bold first step into emissions trading. Anthony Walters, Head of ESG at Clever, highlights five minutes of must-know updates shaping the sustainable finance landscape.
Amazon buys more than 9 million litres of Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
Renewable fuels producer Neste announced a new agreement with Amazon, providing 7,500 metric tons (2.5 million gallons, or 9.4 million litres) of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through the end of 2025 for use by Amazon Air cargo operations at San Francisco International Airport and Ontario International Airport in California.
According to Neste, the company’s Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over the fuel’s life cycle, compared to using conventional jet fuel.
The agreement forms part of Amazon’s efforts to achieve its goal to reach net zero carbon emissions across its global operations by 2040.
Meta Signs Deal to Power Data Centres with Geothermal Energy.
Meta have announced a new agreement with clean energy company XGS Energy for the development of 150 MW of geothermal energy in New Mexico to support Meta’s data centre operations in the state.
XGS Energy provides heat-harvesting technology to enable access to affordable and carbon-free geothermal energy. The company’s solution drills a single directional well to access rock with temperatures of 250 °C or higher and pulls heat into the well through a network of thermally conductive material. The heat can be used directly or converted to electricity.
UK Commits £200M to Acorn Carbon Capture Project, Advancing Net Zero Goals.
The UK government has allocated £200 million to the Acorn carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Scotland — marking the largest government funding commitment to the project to date. The investment, confirmed in the Chancellor’s Spending Review, is designed to drive the project toward a Final Investment Decision (FID) before the end of the current parliamentary term.
The Acorn project, based at the St Fergus Gas Terminal, is led by Storegga alongside Shell UK, Harbour Energy, and North Sea Midstream Partners.
Vietnam Launches Emissions Trading Scheme Covering Half of National CO2 Output.
Vietnam has formally launched the first phase of its emissions trading scheme (ETS), targeting three carbon-heavy industries—steel, cement, and thermal power—in a bid to bring down its rising carbon footprint.
Under the government decree, these industries must purchase emissions allowances based on carbon intensity—CO₂ emitted per unit of output. The scheme’s pilot phase, running through 2029, will cover around 50% of the nation’s total emissions, with plans to expand into transport and commercial buildings.
