In this edition of ESG in 5, Anthony Walters, Head of ESG at Clever, spotlights four recent developments shaping the sustainable business landscape. From Amazon’s water-positive progress to PepsiCo’s expanded regenerative farming goals, these updates reflect the steady pace and growing ambition of corporate sustainability efforts across sectors.
Amazon’s AWS More than Halfway to Achieving Water Positive Goal.
Amazon’s cloud provider service, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that it is more than halfway towards reaching its “water positive” goal to return more water than it uses in its operations by 2030.
AWS initially set its water positive goal in 2022, setting out a strategy to achieve its target based on key aspects, including improving water efficiency, using sustainable water sources, returning water for community reuse, and supporting water replenishment projects.
In its update, AWS revealed that as of 2024, it has reached 53% of the way towards its goal, up from 41% at the end of 2023.
Multi-Company Alliance to Accelerate and Reduce Cost of SAF Production.
Honeywell UOP, Johnson Matthey, GIDARA Energy, and SAMSUNG E&A have today announced the launch of a new alliance aimed at developing a new technology offering to accelerate the production and reduce the cost of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Fuel accounts for most of the aviation sector’s emissions. Generally produced from sustainable resources, like waste oils and agricultural residues, SAF is seen as one of the key tools to help decarbonise the aviation industry in the near-to-medium term. SAF producers estimate the fuels can result in lifecycle GHG emissions reductions of as much as 85% relative to conventional fuels.
According to a recent report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), however, while SAF production is anticipated to double in 2025, it will still account for just 0.7% of airlines’ total fuel consumption. Efforts to meaningfully increase the production of SAF face barriers, including high initial costs and feedstock challenges.
DuPont Reaches 100% Renewable Grid Electricity in EU Operations.
DuPont has announced that 100% of the grid electricity powering its European Union operations now comes from renewable sources, marking a major milestone in its decarbonisation strategy.
The achievement, realised using both bundled and unbundled Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and on-site solar installations, spans all 13 of DuPont’s EU manufacturing facilities.
The move is part of DuPont’s 2030 Sustainability Goals and supports its longer-term ambition of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
PepsiCo Expands Regenerative Agriculture and Sharpens Targets.
PepsiCo has refined its environmental goals under its PepsiCo Positive (pep+) strategy, expanding regenerative agriculture targets and adjusting climate, water, and packaging commitments to improve impact and business resilience.
The company now targets 10 million acres of regenerative agriculture by 2030, nearly tripling its prior footprint. PepsiCo is already on track to deliver 3.5 million acres by the end of 2024, demonstrating scalability.
