This week in ESG: British Airways makes a major move to cut aviation emissions through sustainable fuel, Meta supercharges its renewable energy capacity across the U.S., Google Maps expands eco-friendly travel options across Europe, and DuPont reaches a key milestone by powering all EU operations with renewable electricity. Here are the top headlines, in five.

British Airways to Reduce Emissions by 400,000 Tonnes Through New SAF Purchase Deal.

Biofuels producer EcoCeres announced today a new multi-year sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) transaction with British Airways, supplying the airline with SAF produced from waste-based biomass feedstock to help meet its sustainability goals.

According to EcoCeres, the new agreement will enable British Airways to reduce fuel lifecycle carbon emissions by approximately 400,000 metric tonnes compared with conventional jet fuel, equivalent to the total emissions of flying around 240,000 economy class passengers on return flights between London and New York.

Meta Secures Nearly 800 MW of Renewable Energy to Power U.S. Data Centres

Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp owner Meta and clean energy developer Invenergy announced that they have signed a series of agreements, providing Meta with nearly 800 MW of renewable energy from new wind and solar projects in the US to support its operations and data centre growth. Under the new agreement, electricity from four new projects in Ohio, Arkansas, and Texas will deliver 791 MW of electricity to local grids, with Meta receiving clean energy credits associated with the new generation capacity.

Google Maps Expands Sustainable Travel Features Across Europe.

Google is rolling out major updates to Maps aimed at helping Europeans make more sustainable travel decisions this summer.

A feature introduced last year uses AI to detect when walking or public transit can match driving time — and proactively suggests these options. Google says it has helped avoid “tens of millions of car trips” to date. The tool is currently live in 60+ cities and will expand soon to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Warsaw, and others

DuPont Reaches 100% Renewable Grid Electricity in EU Operations.

DuPont has announced that 100% of the grid electricity powering its European Union operations now comes from renewable sources, marking a major milestone in its decarbonisation strategy.

The achievement, realised through both bundled and unbundled Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and on-site solar installations, spans all 13 of DuPont’s EU manufacturing facilities.

The move is part of DuPont’s 2030 Sustainability Goals and supports its longer-term ambition of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
