This week’s ESG developments highlight the growing focus on climate finance, circular economy investment and industrial decarbonisation, alongside rising expectations for social impact reporting. Key updates include Singapore and the World Bank’s new carbon markets programme, HSBC’s green loan facility for circular economy investments, the TISFD’s proposed human rights and inequality disclosure framework, Lufthansa’s expanded climate protection activity and Germany’s €5 billion decarbonisation scheme for heavy industry.

Singapore and World Bank launch carbon markets programme.
Singapore and the World Bank Group have launched the Singapore Carbon Markets Programme to help countries access climate finance through higher-integrity carbon markets. The programme will focus on three key areas: carbon market infrastructure and technology, new ways to monetise carbon credits, and host country readiness.
The initiative will support interoperable carbon registries, digital monitoring, reporting and verification systems, and national carbon market strategies. It is aimed at tackling barriers including weak technical capacity, fragmented registries and limited buyer confidence, particularly in developing markets.
HSBC backs Circulate Capital with green loan facility.
HSBC has provided Circulate Capital with its first revolving green loan facility to support circular economy investments across South and Southeast Asia. The facility will fund scalable businesses in packaging, recycling and materials, with proceeds aligned to the Asia Pacific Loan Market Association’s Green Loan Principles.
The deal follows the first close of Circulate Capital Ocean Fund II at $220 million, more than 70% of its $300 million target. The fund focuses on India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia, targeting sectors including plastic packaging, electronics and apparel.
TISFD proposes human rights and social impact reporting framework.
The Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures has released the first draft of its proposed framework for reporting on human rights, inequality and people-related business impacts. The framework is designed to help companies and financial institutions disclose impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities linked to workers, consumers, communities and value chains.
The draft sets out five general disclosure requirements, covering materiality, system-relevant information, stakeholder engagement, scope and time horizons. Consultation is open until 31st July 2026, with the final framework expected in late 2027.
Lufthansa passengers offset 710,000 tonnes of CO₂.
Lufthansa Group passengers contributed to climate protection projects covering more than 710,000 tonnes of CO₂ in 2025, around 20% higher year-on-year. The airline has also expanded its climate protection portfolio to 14 projects, covering both emissions avoidance and carbon removal.
The portfolio now includes reforestation, biochar and, for the first time, direct air capture and storage. Lufthansa said the share of projects permanently removing CO₂ from the atmosphere has doubled to around 20%. The group is targeting a neutral CO₂ balance by 2050 and aims to halve net CO₂ emissions by 2030, compared with 2019 levels
Germany wins EU approval for €5bn decarbonisation scheme.
Germany has secured European Commission approval for a €5 billion state aid scheme to help heavy industry replace fossil fuels with low-carbon technologies. The funding will support sectors including steel, cement, chemicals, glass, ceramics, paper, pulp, lime and plaster.
Support will be delivered through 15-year two-way carbon contracts for difference, with eligible technologies including electrification, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, carbon capture and use, biomethane, heat recovery and energy storage. Projects must cut emissions by at least 50% within four years and 85% by the end of the contract period
