This week’s ESG in 5 highlights fresh investment in cleaner energy and climate solutions. KLM is backing a major sustainable aviation fuel plant, Mombak has delivered reforestation credits ahead of schedule, and Base Power and Ore Energy have secured funding to expand battery storage. Meanwhile, Google has signed a long-term agreement to support a new US solar project.

KLM backs $3.5bn Dutch SAF plant.
KLM has agreed to purchase sustainable aviation fuel from SkyNRG’s first dedicated production facility in the Netherlands.
The airline will buy at least 75,000 tonnes annually, representing approximately 75% of the plant’s planned output and nearly $3.5 billion in long-term spending. The commitment helped SkyNRG secure financing for the Delfzijl facility, which is expected to begin producing around 100,000 tonnes of SAF each year from 2028. The project will support the Netherlands’ target of increasing SAF use to 14% by 2030.
Mombak delivers Amazon credits early.
Mombak has delivered more than 21,000 carbon removal credits from its Amazon reforestation projects over two years ahead of schedule.
The Brazilian company has planted nearly 15 million native trees across 12 farms, restoring degraded pastureland while capturing carbon dioxide. Buyers receiving the first credits included Google, McKinsey and McLaren Racing. The issuance is also the first completed delivery through the Symbiosis Coalition, a corporate buyers’ group aiming to contract more than 20 million tonnes of nature-based carbon removals by 2030.
Base Power raises $1bn for home batteries.
Base Power has raised $1 billion to expand its home battery network and support electricity grid reliability across the United States.
The Series D funding values the company at $13 billion and coincides with the launch of Base Core, a US-made battery offering capacities of 39.2 kWh or 78.4 kWh. The system provides households with backup electricity during outages while allowing stored power to support the wider grid during periods of high demand. Base Power will use the funding to accelerate deployment, expand nationally and grow its workforce.
Google signs 15-year solar deal.
Google has agreed to purchase the entire output of German energy company, RWE’s planned 155 MW Crooked Creek solar project in Oklahoma.
The 15-year power purchase agreement will help supply Google’s operations in the Southwest Power Pool market while adding new electricity generation to the regional grid. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with commercial operations scheduled for 2028. The development could employ up to 250 people during peak construction and generate an estimated $25 million for local services and education over its operating life.
Ore Energy raises $43m for iron-air batteries.
Ore Energy has raised $43 million to commercialise its long-duration battery technology and build its first manufacturing facility.
The batteries use iron, water and air to store renewable electricity for up to 100 hours, helping grids manage extended periods of low wind and solar generation. The funding will support the company’s goal of reaching gigawatt-hour-scale manufacturing by 2028.
